Lilian Braithwaite

Was born at Ramsgate, Isle of Thanet. Formerly Shakespearean actress. first silent film, "The Woman who said Nothing"; first talkie, "Carnival." She has a Pekingese dog. Hobbies: swimming, reading and playing the piano.

 

Dame Lilian Braithwaite (1873 - 1948). Distinguished theatre actress who made few films. One of the highlights of her career was creating the role of Florence Lancaster in The Vortex. First film: The World's Desire (1915). The Woman Who Was Nothing was her fourth. Played Ivor Novello's mother in Hitchcock's Downhill but few of her other films are of note. Only made one film after 1932: A Man About the House (1947). She was married to actor Gerald Lawrence. Their daughter Joyce Carey had a long career but is best remembered as the snooty railway buffet manageress in Brief Encounter.
